I don’t care if you have the cash, I don’t care if your kid wants the car, I don’t care if you’re using as a status symbol, just don’t do it.

http://www.quora.com/I-was-thinking…

Give your kid a Geo Metro. Problem solved. Teach him to be humble.

Kids need to learn on a beater car, if only for a few months. The fact that his first car is going to be a Cayman is disgusting.

I think it’s an okay idea honestly...

Now as for the validity of this question, I don’t think anyone with that status is going to ask such a question in that environment.

Possibly a IDRIVEACLS63AMG situation.

It could be serious though. In California there are Chinese families who come over from China to let their children study in American colleges. They let their kids drive exotics such as Ferraris and McLarens to school to show their wealth.

The worst part is that he probably considers a brand new cayman to be a shitty pedestrian car that’s fine if he wrecks it.

They usually become executives at their parents’ companies after college.

I’m sad at not having posting privileges when IDRIVEACL63AMG was around. Or else I would have trolled him.

If the kid has a good head on his shoulders, it’s not going to matter much what he drives.

If he doesn’t, it’s still not going to matter much because he’s going to be an idiot anyway.

I just pray he’s not the person to race all the time. Then he’s going to inevitably get injured.

Why? Is there some reason this impacts us at all, or is it just the desire to tear down anyone successful that’s been in vogue the last few years?

Not my money. I don't care. It'll end up on the FP if he crashes.

He has a few I think. IDRIVEACLS63AMG turned into iliketoyotacenturys or something like that. He came back as irestoreweirdcars. Here is his kinja page: https://kinja.com/weirdcarrestor…

The top post there stirred up some stuff lol

A first car by a new learner should be relatively disposable (but still safe and reliable), in the likely event of damage. If a car is damaged and repaired, an inexperienced driver may not recognize factors in an incorrect repair, putting them and others at risk. Additionally, if the goal is to teach vehicular responsibility, using an older/cheaper tends to allow for more affordable insurance, maintenance, repairs, and other upkeep.

Just as a child’s first bike wouldn’t be at the same model that Lance Armstrong would use, or a child learning baseball isn't put into a MLB game, one should use the appropriate tool for the job.

Putting aside the idea that cars should be junked instead of repaired, there’s nothing stopping you from buying someone whatever first car you deem appropriate. Others will disagree, and if they’re paying for it, who cares? It’ll either work out find, or come out of their pockets.

I never said it should be junked, just relatively disposable, that is, once the new driver is used to driving, it can be passed on, either sold, parted out, scrapped, or even kept as a tertiary vehicle. Apparently the OP subject felt a 9-year-old Gallardo met this criteria, though I imagine even if I were a multi-millionaire (or more), my kids would learn to drive on something like a Mazda2 or Ford Fiesta, and they could use it until they bought themselves something they preferred, if they wanted. Back in the ‘90s, Bill Gates daily drove his family around in a Ford Explorer, and apparently his kids learned how to drive in a (blue?) Ford Focus that he used as a daily driver.

Back around 1970 or so a guy at my hi-skool got a Shelby GT350 for his first car; dead within less than a year.

This is very true. Often times the kids studying abroad can live a more excessive life than those back in China, because the government has been trying to dissuade wealthy Chinese from showcasing their opulent lifestyle with things like million-dollar cars. In Cali, however, they don’t have to worry so much what the Chinese Communist Party thinks.

At that point I can’t be mad at his choice for a first car, that’s just pure sadness...
